How to Finance a Pool: Loan Types Compared
Most pools are financed. The loan type can change your total cost by thousands, so compare before you pick a builder’s lender.
The main options
- Cash. No interest, but do not drain your emergency fund for a pool.
- Unsecured personal or pool loan. Fast and your home is not collateral, but rates are usually higher.
- Home equity loan. A fixed-rate lump sum borrowed against your home. Lower rates are common, but the CFPB notes you can lose your home if you cannot repay.
- HELOC. A revolving line, usually with a variable rate, so payments can rise.
- Cash-out refinance. Replaces your whole mortgage. Rarely worth it if your current mortgage rate is low.
- Builder or dealer financing. Convenient. Check the APR, term and any fees, and compare with an outside offer.
A quick comparison
Put each offer into the pool financing calculator with its real APR, term and fees. Judge on total interest and whether the payment fits your budget alongside the yearly running cost.
Red flags
- A quote that only shows a monthly payment.
- Prepayment penalties.
- Pressure to sign the loan the same day as the build contract.
- Large deposits before permits are issued.
Common questions
What credit score do I need for a pool loan?
Requirements vary by lender. Getting prequalified with a soft credit check from a few lenders is the best way to compare.
